I watched Beyoncé’s Homecoming. It was epic – that is the only word I can think to describe it.
What came through was the unbridled, fierce joy, the teeth-clenching determination, the insistence on the vision, the dedication, the commitment, the inconceivably hard work… and on and on.
It makes me wonder: what does it feel like to create something that is a celebration, a gift, a homage all at once?
What does it feel like to GIVE that much?
To have a visual in your mind’s eye, but also a feeling you want to have and to give?
If you were to create an opus, what form would it take?
If it could be exactly as you desire, a pie-in-the-sky legacy of You, what would it BE?
Sometimes I ask myself these questions and they trigger self-doubt. I’m not thinking big enough, my anxious thoughts swirl. I can’t think of anything epic! And even if I could, I’d never be able to do it.
I tell myself, just imagine something incredible and enjoy it. It could be an incredible story, or song, or dinner party, or nonprofit, or ANYTHING.
I love the way that performance works of art ignite your imagination. They give you so many FEELS, the kind you wish you could bottle up for later. They make you realize – and wonder – what is possible.
Towards the end Beyoncé says, “It’s possible. If my country ass can do it, they can do it.”
